The South African Institution of Mechanical Engineering announces the appointment of Uncel Mhelembe as the new Chief Executive.
He has taken up the role, effective February 2023, a year after the departure of the previous CEO, Vaughan Rimbault. Uncel was appointed to the Institution as General Manager in February 2020.
He comes with a great background in the Mechanical Engineering discipline having graduated with a BTech Degree in Mechanical Engineering from VUT in 2008. Uncel holds a GCC (Factories) as well as an MBA from NWU and is currently enrolled for his MEng in Mechanical Engineering with the University of the Witwatersrand. He is registered as a Pr. Cert Eng with ECSA.
Uncel worked at Eskom Rotek Industries and for Wärtsilä as a Mechanical Engineer, GMR2(1) appointee before starting his own consulting engineering company in 2015, Rhino Consulting Engineers. Through his company, he held GMR2(1) positions for the Greater Tzaneen municipality and worked on various municipal and government projects.
Council is delighted to have Uncel as part of its leadership and is confident that he will lead the organisation with innovation, distinction and integrity. Uncel’s appointment came after the inauguration of Portia Moketla as the 2022/2024 SAIMechE President.

I am not a member of the SAIMechE at this point, however, I am looking forward to join this organization. I am sensing a real transformation from this massive organization. Mr Mhelembe, this country requires engineers of your caliber, and your achievements bear the testimony to my viewpoint.
