The SAIMechE UJ APK Student Chapter Roadshow was hosted at the University of Johannesburg on 03 March 2023. The event was intended to educate new members about the benefits of joining SAIMechE, and introduce the professional development programmes (PDP) as well as the importance of registration to the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). This event was divided into two, namely: The Student Chapter presentation and the fun day.
The first part took place in a lecture hall with more than one hundred students in attendance. Uncel Mhelembe, CEO of SAIMechE and EXCO member, gave a presentation on the in’s and out’s of SAIMechE and how to set about becoming a member as a student. In addition, he outlined the ECSA various registration categories, namely: Professional Engineer (Pr Eng), Professional Technologist( Pr Tech Eng), Professional certificated Engineer( Pr Cert Eng) and Professional Technician ( Pr Techni Eng).
Prospective employment
Uncel also emphasised the importance of being a part of SAIMechE while studying as this sets students apart from all other graduates when they are looking for prospective employment.
After the presentation, the fun day event took place at an open field within UJ. Here, the mechanical engineering students could meet up and take part in games prepared by the members of the SAIMechE UJ Student Chapter. These games included musical chairs, morabaraba, spaghetti, three-legged race, and bouncing balls into cups so that the students might become more comfortable socialising and networking with one another. Food and refreshments were also offered.
Both events were well attended.
